Be a Big Brother

You have a big opportunity in front of you—to not only impact a child’s life today, but to transform their potential for tomorrow.

We’re always looking for people eager to positively impact a child and improve their community at the same time. And, right now is no different. Big Brothers are in high demand. So, Become a Defender of Potential!

Having Fun is Key

For a few hours, a couple times a month, you can give a Little Brother the invaluable gift of your friendship. By simply changing their perspective of what the world can offer, you can literally start changing their lives. And sometimes it’s as simple as playing video games, going to a museum, becoming food critics, or just hanging out together.

This is what some of our Big Brothers have helped our Little Brothers experience:

First time carving a pumpkin
First time playing catch
First time riding a bicycle
First time catching a fish

What are your hobbies that might interest a Little Brother?

Boating or Sailing
Fishing or Hunting
Playing Video Games
Running or Exercising
Playing baseball, basketball, football, bowling
Watching baseball, basketball, football

Why do we need Big Brothers?

Approximately 65% of our children waiting for a Big Brother are boys, but only 2 out of every 10 inquiries to volunteer come from men. Research shows that having the positive influence of a Big Brother makes a real difference in a boy’s life. So join our team of volunteers and give a child someone to look up to. And learn why so many are now saying, “I get back so much more than I give.”

A call to men of color.

Disproportionately the children we serve and those waiting to be matched are African-American and Hispanic boys. Their parents seek our support, knowing a Big Brother can recognize their son’s potential and model positive choices that put him on the path for success in and out of school.

Quick Steps to Become a Big Brother

Here are the quick and easy steps we’ll walk you through:

  1. Inquire Online. Inquire today to speak with a Big Brothers Big Sisters staff member.
  2. Apply. After you inquire online, a Big Brothers Big Sisters staff member will contact you to review our program options and confirm your mailing address so we can send you an application packet.
  3. Interview. A Big Brothers Big Sisters staff member will interview you in person.
  4. Background Check. Child safety is our priority, so we’ll review your records to ensure you’ll be a good fit for our program.
  5. References. You’ll need to provide at least three references of people we can talk to about your ability to be a mentor.
  6. Matching. We will review the kids in your area who need a Big Brother and find the best fit for you. Depending on the kind of child you’d like to work with, matching may go very quickly or take some time. Making the right match is important to our commitment to form lasting relationships.

Depending on the program you select, you will meet your Little Sister at her school or in the community. Learn more about our programs.
