Firearms and Weapons Policy

  • During the volunteer interview the Big Brothers Big Sisters staff will inquire about the presence of firearms, weapons, and ammunition within the volunteer applicant’s home.
  • Volunteer Big applicants and matched must disclose the ownership of such items during the interview and throughout the life of the match.
  • Volunteer Big applicants and matched Bigs must attest to the fact that any weapons, firearms, or ammunition ownership are licensed, permitted, registered, and handled in accordance with New Jersey state and federal laws.
  • Any disclosures of weapons, firearms or ammunition will be documented in the Agency Information System and the volunteer’s file.
  • Any disclosure of firearms, weapons, or ammunition ownership will be shared with the parent/guardian throughout the life of the match.
  • The volunteer must agree that weapons, firearms, and ammunition will not be accessible to a child while in the care of the Volunteer and they are locked from access by the Little.
  • Any activity that may involved a weapon, firearm or ammunition must be approved by the parent/guardian and volunteer Big. The information must be documented in the Agency Information System. (e.g., Hunter Safety Course, Archery Course, etc.)
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cumberland & Salem Counties recommends that no volunteer carry any firearm, weapon, or ammunition while on an outing with a child with the except in the case where a law enforcement official is required to carry a weapon at all times as a condition of their employment, agency professionals must document the weapon related job requirements as well as parent notification of the requirements and their approval of the condition prior to match.
  • Hunting knives, swords, explosives, guns, bow and arrows, bullets of any kind etc. are considered weapons.
