Any volunteer Big who will be transporting a child must fill out an Auto Insurance Verification Form, submit a copy of their auto insurance declaration page and provide their driver’s license number on the enrollment application.
This paperwork will ensure that auto insurance has been obtained at a minimum in the amount required by the State of New Jersey for the designated automobile that the child will be transported in.
Parents are required to fill out a Liability Release Form which ensures that the parent understands every reasonable precaution will be taken to ensure the safety of the child while they are participating in Big Brothers Big Sisters Program. This form provides that all claims of injuries are relinquished of any nature while the child is engaged in Big Brothers Big Sisters activities. The potential volunteer Big must complete all applicable enrollment forms.
The agency does not allow siblings, cousins, neighbors, or friends of any Little to participate in match activities. The agency assumes no control, liability or responsibility associated with any violations from this policy.
Under no circumstance is a School Based/Site Based Big permitted to transport their Little.
The Volunteer Big assumes responsibility for transporting their Little. The agency requires that under no circumstance (with the exception of public transportation) should the Little be transported by anyone other than a driver listed on their automobile insurance policy. The volunteer must be with the child during all forms of transportation.
During training the volunteer will be provided with guidelines to follow that focus on seatbelt use, car seat use, prohibitions on the use of cell phones, use of alcohol or other drugs prior to driving a child in accordance with New Jersey State Laws.
The New Jersey Child Passenger Safety Law (CPS) is provided to all volunteer Bigs and parents during the matching process.
Volunteers are prohibited from the following when they are planning an outing or going to transport or have any time of meaningful contact with a child:
The use of tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, illegal drugs, prescribed drugs that can impair driving before or during visits with Littles is prohibited.
Use of cell phones is prohibited while driving with Littles in accordance with New Jersey’s ban on the use of hand-held cell phones while driving (2003).
